Sony Announces PSP 3000

Refinement, not development, appears to be Sony's PSP game plan. While many expected revolutionary changes before the PSP 2000 was announced, we merely received a slightly thinner unit, with s-video output.  Now, the law of diminishing returns rears its ugly head and we receive a microphone and 'anti-reflection technology' with the announcement of the PSP 3000.

Sony executives describe the new PSP 3000 screen to have a "wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio, for deeper, more vibrant colors." One drawback we've always had with the current PSP was the inability to play the handheld outdoors- sunlight effectively killed the ability to see anything onscreen. That problem appears to be rectified with the new anti-refection tech. Although we at Tech-Gaming would love to see a PSP with an OLED screen that is oblivious to direct sunlight, we're afraid this would be cost prohibitive.

The PSP 3000 unit will be available in the US in October, shipping with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, a game that will be nearly two years old when the new handheld ships. Once again, Sony makes some interesting and enigmatic decisions.
