New Releases for the Week of June 5th, 2011

Arguably, one of the most inopportune periods to release a game is during the midst of the Electronic Entertainment Expo. With PR reps, reviews, and gamers across the globe focusing on the virtues of forthcoming titles, the games currently filling store shelves are bound to be neglected. Defying conventional wisdom, publishers are releasing a number of big name titles this week- from Infamous 2, Operation Flashpoint: Red River, and Red Faction: Armageddon. Hopefully, any commendable games are able to garner attention during the din of the convention.

DesertEagle’s Pick:  After blowing through a trifecta of tactic-free shooting galleries FPS (referred only by the callsign Kill of Duty: Bad Company), 2009’s Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising offered a refreshing reprieve, rewarding brains over mere battlefield brawn. While early reports indicate developers Codemasters pushed to make sequel Red River more accessible, I hope they didn’t dial down too many of the franchise’s strategic elements.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: InFamous was a great game, but it never grabbed me the way I thought it should. However, now that my home-sweet-home is being heavily referenced in InFamous 2, I can’t help but get a little excited to see how Cole handles his liquor in the Quarter!

Samurage’s Pick: As I’m already in California I won’t be picking up any titles at all until I get back after E3.  But of the releases this week, I’d have to go with World of Battles: Morningstar.  I always like to try new RTS games, and the folks at Frogwares are releasing all kinds of bonus goodness, like a bonus XP weekend for tomorrow and Sunday.  Free gifts and extra XP definitely give the title a step up above the competition for me this week.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. Green Lantern Rise of the Manhunters could be a trainwreck. I don’t know if it will be worse than the movie though.

  2. I was interested in Red Faction: Armageddon at one time, until I heard they took all the open-world parts out, which was the best part of Guerilla.

  3. if Nintendo thinks anyoen going to buy a 3DS just for free Exitebike, they’re smoking Wii-d.

    1. Have you ever heard Mark MacDonald talk about the old GB games? He’s hilarious but true- they are all blurry and old. Now way could they be fun anymore.

      1. Did they recreate the puke green color and impossible to see unless your in perfect lighting visuals??? 😉

      2. I heard that. I think he was exgurrating though. The GB wasn’t that bad.

  4. I thought the magnetic gun in Red Faction: Armageddon was pretty fun. Maybe I’ll get the full game.

  5. Could be time for Beyond Good & Evil HD now that PSN is working again.

    1. Super Mario Land will cost $3.99, and Alleyway and Radar Mission will cost $2.99.

The lowest price for the eShop is $1.99

  6. Since the site changed, no one writes “First” anymore. Did you guys put a filter in or something?

    Red Faction: Armageddon, maybe.

  7. Operation Flashpoint: Red River. I’m with DesertEagle- I want a military sim not a auto-aim aracde game.

  8. I didn’t know NOLA was born in NO. I though all you were So. Cal natives…

    1. I’m an army brat – I was actually born in Ft.Lewis, WA, but I lived in New Orleans longer than anywhere else (7 years) and that’s where my family still lives. I’ve only been in Los Angeles for 2.5 years.

      1. I was born in Oakland, CA, and grew up in Concord, having the Naval Weapon Depot as my backyard. Which meant retrieving a Frisbee was like a Splinter Cell mission.

  9. What the hell did they do to Red Faction? The demo was nothing like the last game.

    1. I didn’t even know there WAS a Green Lantern game until the week before it came out – but from what I’ve heard, it’s better than Thor…I’ve yet to see if it’s better than BoneTown.

  10. SeanNOLA have you played Infamous yet? What did you think of the demo if you haven’t played the full version.

  11. With all the E3 stuff announced I can’t get excited about this weeks stuff.
