Blast From the Past- Serious Sam HD Review
During the Spring of 2001, I needed a game to show off the graphical capacity of my bleeding edge NVIDIA G-Force2 MX 400 video card. On a recommendation of a friendly and seemingly knowledgeable salesclerk, I picked up Serious Sam: The First Encounter. After a mad rush home and an install period wrought with eager anticipation, it was time to see the capacity of my new hardware. Once Serious Sam’s opening screen was feverishly bypassed, I was transported to a realm with far-reaching draw distances, blistering framerates, and swarms of imaginative, incensed foes. For a few fleeting weeks, the title catapulted me into technological nirvana.
In the nine years since Sam’s debut, FPSs have evolved into a variety of sub-genres and also grown in complexity. Telescopic zooms, cover systems, and savvy artificial intelligence are all near-requisite elements of contemporary shooters. When Croteam first announced its plans to revitalize their nearly decade-old franchise, I had my suspicions. Could offering a graphical makeover to the game be enough to satisfy modern FPS aficionados?
In many ways, the developer’s visually revitalized diversion defies its age. Hearing the ghostly gallop of a herd of Kleer Skeletons still evokes a tense of dread, as do the intensifying screams of approaching headless suicide bombers. The game’s intriguing cadence of the sporadic enemy punctuated by the sudden barrage of bloodthirsty foes, remains relevant and recalls the uneasy tempo of the Left 4 Dead series. The game’s variety of weapons- from a laser gun with searing firing rate to a cannon which dispenses uranium-enhanced shot has lost little of its bombastic verve.
Yet for every facet of Serious Sam that is ageless, there are a number of gameplay mechanics which might baffle modern gamers. Enemies sporadically respawn in front (or even worse- directly behind) the player. While this convention might have elevated the tension at the start of the millennium, today the technique seems woefully archaic. Players pampered by the automatic checkpoint systems of contemporary titles, will need to adjust to Sam’s PC-centric save system. In between assault waves, players will have to manually record the status of the game. While it’s as effortless as tapping the ‘Y’ button, remembering to do this after replenishing the protagonist’s health is a bit of a nag.
While much of Serious Sam HD faithfully recreates the experience of playing the original game, having co-operative online play with up to three other players is a welcome addition. Although the inevitability of participants to stockpile limited amounts of ammo and health builds a competitive vibe, the absence of any kind of deathmatch mode is puzzling. Surely, for a premium priced game ($15), this variation should have been incorporated.
The title’s high definition makeover allows Serious Sam to advantageously compete again his downloadable peers. Each retextured antagonist is nicely detailed, and gives up a gratifying amount of gibs when exterminated. Although players adjacent to a wall may spy a pixelated textures, most of the time players will be too busy tackling an encroaching mob to notice. The game’s refresh rate remains consistently steady during the game’s simple player campaign; only during multiplayer games did the framerate falter.
Fans of brains-off, balls-out adrenaline-fueled shooters should appreciate Serious Sam HD’s frenzied gameplay. Sure, the game may lack the tactical finesse or elegant AI found in modern FPSs, but it’s still an undeniably gratifying thrill ride. Except for the decision to unbundle the content from part iterations into two parts, revitalizing this classic title was an inspired choice.
$15 seems a bit much. $10 would have got me.
I don’t remember this game being so hard on the GC. Maybe I lost my skills over the years.
I remember playing this and thinking that graphics couldn’t possibly get any better.
Why is he called ‘Serious’? I thought this game was kind of silly.
Anyone else thought it’s weird that they put an email system in the middle on a intense FPS?
Didn’t like the demo much.
No deathmatch mode? Why?
Now, just bring back Duke Nukem, and all will be well.
MUCH better than the IGN review. I quote-
“It’s definitely prettier than the original, but it’s no Crysis”
Wow, really?
Did anyone ever play the second Serious Sam? God it sucked on Xbox. piss-poor framerate throughout.
Speaking of which, how come Crysis hasn’t come out on consoles?
Now you mention it…
Welcome back, Sam. Hopefully we’ll get a real sequel now.
If this ever goes on sale, I might pick it up. By then I’m sure no one will be playing it.
“Except for the decision to unbundle the content from part iterations into two parts, revitalizing this classic title was an inspired choice.”
Say what?
360 only? Boo!
Seriously good review.
I have to agree. $15 is a bit much $10 would have been a better launch price.
How come the look of Sam changes with every game? I remember when he looked like Duke Nukem.
He’s got a goatee now? Wait did he join a band or something?
I played the demo and thought it looked nice, but felt real old. Spawning monsters behind your back is uberlameness.
Thats what I thought. It’s time to bring this franchise up to date.
Thanks for the review. We’d like to reprint it on our site with your permission.
I’m on the verge of buying this. How is the matchmaking for finding coop matches?
I bought it. So far I really like it. Never played the original.
Good review, Desert.
I think it’s almost time to bring back Turok from the grave.
Just saw the file size- it’s almost half a gig! Taking a while to download.
I remember playing this through the summer of 01. Great game.
If MS ever has a sale, I’ll grab it.
I played the demo and forgot how all the AI does in make a Beeline for the player. It’s funny how far gaming has come in 10 years.
I always like Serious Sam’s cheekiness. I’ll have to give this one a try.
Looks nice and bloody. Just they way I like my FPS.
This is such a fun game. Its all out non stop action and that makes this such a thrill. The game looks very nice with the HD graphics too. Oh and the enemy Bosses, are seriously great.
