E3 Overview: Day Zero
Jeremy’s Overview:
Microsoft’s Hits:
The New Xbox 360
I have to admit, I’m pleased to see a renewed commitment from Microsoft on the current generation. I always had a bit of a bone to pick when the previous gen systems were dropped like an ugly baby. Especially if backwards compatibility is becoming a thing of the… past. Hey! I was still playing with that!
Sunset Overdrive
Yeah, it was just a pre-rendered trailer of cartoony parkour with Resistance aliens, but I believe that Insomniac Games has a vision here, and a pretty strong one. As someone who liked Brink, I feel like a mashup of nonstop traversal and Insomniac’s penchant for weird weapons could really be something special.
World of Tanks
Did you know World of Tanks is huge? It’s huge. I know it’s huge. And it’s probably fun. But darn it if I could just never get interested… until I saw it at Microsoft’s presser. I don’t know what it was, but my inner child suddenly looked up, pointed a stubby finger at the stage, and remembered “HEY! TANKS ARE COOL!”
The Retirement of Microsoft Points
Glad to see those things go. Why abstract your currency and force you to carry a balance all the time? To be SHADY, that’s why. And that little symbol was dumb too! >:( Anyway, they’re getting rid of them. So that’s a positive! 😀
This also gets the award for “most genuine applause of the press event.”
The Desert Bedouin from the Future…
Really pushed my Dune button. Hard. Possibly my favorite moment of the presser.
Microsoft’s Misses:
…who was actually Master Chief.
Poo. I mean, yeah, Halo is cool. But what if that had been a brave new IP? So deflated.
Project Spark
Hey, it’s not that I have a problem with Project Spark. I like me some god games. A lot. What bothered me was the presentation. Microsoft Studios GM Dave McCarthy was pretty clearly talking over a pre-recorded demonstration video. I fully believe that interesting procedural fun can be had with Project Spark, but the stage demo left me feeling empty inside. Well, emptiER.
Titanfall
I want to give credit where it’s due, but Titanfall is really going to need to sell me on why it deserves my time or money more than any of the other multiplayer shooters out there. It’s made from bits of half a dozen other similar games. Show me that you’re more than the sum of your parts. (I’m looking at you too, Destiny.)
Xbox One, No- Four Ninety Nine
$499. I have NO PROBLEM with this price on its own. It’s a bargain for what we can expect to get out of (Unless you’re outside North America, in which case… ouch.) I bet you they didn’t plan to be 25% more expensive than the PS4 though.
Sony’s Hits
PS Three-Ninety-Nine
Amazing. Undercutting Microsoft by a hundred bucks, with very reasonable non-North American pricing. Friendly suggestion: Pre-order this one, because I suspect it will be very supply-constrained just on the price factor alone.
Used Games
I have never seen such a shit-eating grin at a corporate press event as Jack Tretton during the moment of impact when he announced that Sony would not be changing its policy toward after-market sale of software.
Le Gameplay
Actual gameplay footage from Batman: Arkham Origins, Watch_Dogs, and Assassin’s Creed 4. None of these were new announcements, but it was nice to see something a more organic demonstration of several of the games at Sony’s presser.
The Order: 1886
Yes, this one is just a trailer, but the game is being created by Ready at Dawn (who made the excellent God of War PSP games) and Sony Santa Monica. That fact alone should be enough to get all your attention. Plus the steampunk aesthetic (which typically doesn’t interest me) and general badassery just LOOKED great. The Order: 1886 was possibly the best unexpected game announcements of the event.
Indies
It’s great to see that the people with the most creative freedom in the video game space are able to self-publish in the next generation of consoles. This refreshing initiative has been a great move for Sony on a couple of levels. I want to play Octodad.
Sony’s Misses
PS4 Design
Hey, that sure looks a lot like an Xbox One. Which looked a lot like a VHS player. OK, so it’s a box. Seems pretty compact though.
Vita Who?
The Vita got a few mentions, and is shining a bit of reflected light from the PS4 (Remote Play, Gaikai PS3 streaming) but it feels like the Vita was slightly snubbed at this event. I’m not worried at all about the library of games currently (or eventually) available for the platform, but it would be nice to see some promotion, especially if the price is staying the same. At least TRY to sell it on the value proposition!
PS+ Required for Basic Online
Yeah, this has always been my biggest beef against the Xbox. And you, know, I want to stick by my principles… but it’s so hard when they load you down every month with other benefits. Honestly it helps when you really feel like you’re getting something whether or not you’re a regular online gamer. But I thought I should mention it anyway.
I was ALMOST onboard with the XBone, thinking about preordering. Then the Sony Megaton happened. I immediately got a PS4 through Amazon.
I’m waiting for a side by side tech comparison (hint, hint).
The memory of the Xbox 1 and the multiple OS’s have me very worried though. Sounds like some blot on board.
You’re very lucky, I read a lot of complains last night about being unable to pre-order.
I got in with Amazon without a problem.
It was the year of sequels and HD remasters. Almost nothing looks original so far. I’m cool with that, but I am hoping for something new.
Also: Except for KI, there’s not that many fighters announced. Have they feel out of favor?
Wait did you guy recycle last years graphic or is anyone still making Wii and DS games?
Disney’s Planes would be one example of gaming coming out for both the DS and Wii.
New hardware looks good, but I want to know what is going to be out at launch before I drop $400/$500.
I don’t want to stuck in a Wii U situation.

Great list, thank you Hattori Hanzo.
Decent write up from Robert and Say. Both seem to have it against Microsoft through.
Dat bias.
As for me, there’s still too many unanswered questions. I went ahead and bought a Vita and Wii U at launch. I don’t want to be fooled again.
I was hoping for MS to come forward and actually clear the air, but after all was said and done there was a lot uncertainty which became somewhat disappointment.
Yeah I really think that’s a huge problem. I wont even think about dropping half a grand until I know the details.
Ryse looked like Arse. Same moves over and over again. Plus it was stuttery.
The only game that made me laugh was Octodad. Maybe Jeremy LaMont is right, games are taking themselves way too seriously.
Octodad has been around for a while, I was pleasantly surprised to see them in that indie lineup.
I don’t trust any E3 analysis unless your carrying a plastic wrestling belt, wearing a wife beater , and say “you know what I’m saying” after every sentence. 😉
Ok, seriously. good job people.
Haha, thank you. It was quite the first day, alright.
I thought the MS show was OK until Sony presented. Yeah, it was too long, but that sweet $399 payoff at the end was worth it.
Anyone think the console was going to be $350 and they realized they could raise the price after Xbone announcement.
Damn, the Say really brought it. She outwrote the DesertEagle.
Haha “The Say” – I feel like I should be wearing a plastic belt like Unknown Gamer mentioned up there.
I think he’s talking about HipHopLamer. Don’t be that guy.
“Oh, and they also partnered up with Twitch, in case anyone would care.”
Whoa, did Twitch piss you off or what?
Actually, I’ve got nothing against Twitch. They will move on to do great and wonderful things no matter whatever petty remark I would share or whoever they could partner up.
Haha.
I just hope they can’t keep from crashing. Every LP I watch ends with a fireball finisher.
I wanted to be nice and avoid saying that, but deep down I feel kind of glad it’s not just me.
Twitch never works for me. It crashes at least once every 15 minutes.
Wow, a 4 page article, and skipping pages offered more than just a picture. I’m impressed.
All that’s missing is a unified format. 😉
I’m I the only one not drinking the Sunset Overdrive Kool-Aide here?
Insomniac hasn’t had a great game in a long time, and this doesn’t look like it. I think it’s an open that the showed no actual gameplay and if Jeremy’s Brink comparison is right, this looks like a stinker.
Looks like PAIN, the PS3 game with guns.
Yeah, Sunset Overdrive… certainly not the only one who feels that way. I think I found a youtube video that sort of describes it rather well – http://youtu.be/XlkZNNaYBro It’s worth watching the whole 3 minutes :p
Yeah, not really expecting much from Insomniac. Their best days are behind them.
Blue refuses to post comments until there’s a Sailor Moon announced for the next-next gen.
Good write-up this year. I like 4 pages instead of reading 50 IGN Kot-stiq articles
@Jeremy – “Hey, that sure looks a lot like an Xbox One. Which looked a lot like a VHS player.” #Betamax.
But the PS4 is smaller, that’s the big difference.
Good article. Each writer’s style is very different, which was a little weird though.
Its like hearing from the Sony hivemind. I think you all have it out for Microsoft.
Actually I trust them. They seem sincere and aren’t hawking Dew ‘n Doritos.
Actually, I love Dew and Doritos (Spicy Sweet Chili FTW!). However, I enjoy them at my own expense. 😉
As for the “Sony hivemind” thing, let’s face it, Sony crushed Microsoft on the two most important issues; consumer trust/DRM and hardware pricing. We all heard the crowd reactions at the Sony event and there’s no way that was all paid Sony interns. Those were gamers that Sony connected with.
Once again I agree with Blue.
Everyone is open to their own opinions regarding Xbox and PS4, I doubt any of us would make or break Microsoft or Sony in the big scheme of things, so there is no need to victimize either of those brands.
So you’re trying to tell us what we can discuss? Who appointed you as mod again?
She just stating her opinion on the console wars. No need to be a total asswad about it.
I have got no idea how you could even come to that conclusion as it is, I have never told you or anyone around here what you can or cannot talk about. I was specifically talking about the Microsoft remark, that company is one of the top 5 in the world – they will be more than ok regardless of whatever happens with the console.
Looks like no Xbox Done in Japan: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/xbox-one-will-support-live-in-these-countries-at-launch/
