Incendiary- Just Cause 2 Review
A timeworn Russian adage states that people can be endlessly fascinated by watching three things- children playing, a woman dancing, and fire burning. Recent release Just Cause 2 gives players two of these components; although there’s no gyrating girls, the title presents an enormous sandbox full of toys eager to generate some of the most satisfying detonations seen on home consoles. Like Red Faction: Guerrilla, the game proves that destroying landscapes can be a delightfully cathartic sensation.
Rico Rodriguez, the protagonist of the original title, returns as the game’s provocateur of pandemonium. While the game’s storyline is skeletal- concerning Rodriguez’s hunt for a missing mentor, it presents just enough momentum to drive the explosive action. Like most open-world titles, players have a central goal along with a host of sub-missions offered by the title’s three militant factions. Many players may find that the game’s varied play mechanics and proficiently designed game world are rewarding enough to support impromptu mayhem marches. I frequently found myself spontaneously toying with Just Cause 2’s tropical isle- from launching volatile vehicles into enemy trucks to impulsively storming military compounds, there plenty of impetuous mayhem to be found.
Beyond the requisite assortment of offensive weaponry, players are given two tools that elevate Just Cause 2 above most sandbox-based titles. Although many games have employed grappling hooks to navigate environments, few have implemented them without substantial restriction. Rico’s apparatus fastens to any surface, allowing him to scale buildings, mountains, and tree with assurance. The grappling hook’s reach is also enjoyably lengthy- permitting the protagonist to flee enemies or climb tall building with a few well-placed shots. Alternatively, the tool can also be used to snatch foes from lofty perches, gratifyingly sending snipers plunging to their death.
When used in combination with the Rico’s ever-present parachute, players may also initiate a perpetual glide over the island terrain. Gamers merely have to deploy their chute, while sporadically launching the grappling hook at a downward angle to slingshot quickly across the terrain. Of course, the player’s ram-air also permits sky descents, perfect for when your helicopter or jet falls victim to an irksome surface-to- air missile.
While the title has a few noticeable quirks, they hardly prohibit players from reveling in all the disorderly devastation. Rico can use his grappling hook to connect two items- such as an opponent to a flaming, about to detonate, propane tank. Occasionally the tether is cut by unseen forces, or the game’s phsyics system will determine that a half-ton truck can’t pull an overturned scooter. The game’s requisite black market arms dealer, Sloth Demon, is often rendered redundant from the abundance of ammo scattered around bases, and his exuberant prices which require a weapon repurchase merely to restock your ammo.
Visually, Just Cause 2 reigns over all of its open-world peers. With a habitually fluid framerate, astonishing draw distance, and hundreds of air, water, and ground based vehicles to commandeer, the game’s graphical appeal is undeniable. Explosions convincingly rip silos apart, displaying carefully crafted clouds of brilliant color and billowing smoke. The game’s day and night cycles are wonderfully evocative- allowing players to take to rain-filled skies ruled by imposing thunderheads.
Gamers who thought Mercenaries 2 didn’t live up to it’s next-gen promise, or couldn’t get enough of the marvelous mayhem offered by Red Faction: Guerrilla will undoubtedly adore Just Cause 2’s breathtaking bedlam. Avalanche Studios presents players with a pleasing playground brimming with enough explosive targets to outmatch a dozen summer blockbusters. Hopefully, they won’t make up wait another four years for the next fiery follow-up.
The demo was so kick ass, I’m not surprised by the score.
Any differences between the 360 and PS3 versions?
as a fan of Red Faction, I’m going to get this for sure.
I’ve been hearing some crazy praise for this one.
The PS3 version lets you upload videos to YouTube I hear.
Gamepro gave this one a 60/100. Can you believe that? I’ve been glued to the game for two days straight.
Can everything be destroyed like RF:G? If so, I’m getting this for sure.
That reviewer “Xav de Matos” need to be retired. He’s so full of shit it’s not even funny.
Who reads gamepro anymore? They need to return to those crazy faces for reviews.
Dude, all the comments are this guy responding to critics. It’s hilarious!
How about the “gameboyz” review that knock the game for not having MP.
Sure you’ve going to have that graphical fidelitity with MP, right, buddy.
Anyone who gives this game less than a B/80 needs to check their reviewing skills. I haven’t loved a game this much since Crackdown.
Nice review, Deagle!
Bought this one today. Man, it’s so intense. Nothing but gunfights and explosions.
I wish the guns weren’t so weaksauce. Man those guys take 12 bullets to drop.
Hell yeah this game rocks!
I’ve heard that collecting item and blowing stuff up gets old after a while. Did you find that?
Did you get the shirt and bag that Shipwreck got? I hope that didn’t influence the score?
I’m glad this turned out better than the first one, which was lacking a bit. I cant believe it came out 4 years ago.
Who wants to bet they turn this into a movie.
You guys and your shooting games are so easily entertained 😛
I dunno, I like realstic games. It seems like this one is just too crazy.
Wow, the metacritic on this one goes from 100-60. I cant think of too many games with a range that big.
That site is garbage, why are you even reading it?
I wish they’d stop playing games and learn to write a sentence.
Great review, people.
One more question- is there any blood in the game?
Nope, I got snubbed, therefore the game must be awesome.
Sure, after a while, but like Crackdown, I’m sure I’ll return to it in a month or so.
Guys AND Girls like action games.
I’ll probably pick it up this weekend.
The game crashed once on me, right after I met Bolo. 360 version here.
The planes control pretty poorly. They’re really hard to fly.
Great review. I’m pretty excited for this game.
I’ll be gameflying this one for sure. I love the sandbox style games.
How much of the score is just DE liking to blow shit up?
Do Russian women like to watch men dance 😉
I’m seven hours in, let me know one thing- Are bridges destroyable.
Yeah, there is. It flies off, but doesn’t stay on characters. Looks like of plastic, if you ask me.
Awesome review. I want to play it pretty bad right now.
Can you make craters in the ground from the explosions. I’ve always wanted to see that in a game.
That first pic reminds of Mad Max/Road Warrior.
99.9% of it, most likely.
What everyone’s favorite thing to do in the game? I like driving the fast motorcycle in the cops, or connecting the grapple to the the tanks that point toward the sky, and listing to the guys talk shit at they go to the moon.
I REALLY need to get this. Sounds really fun. I love screwing around in game worlds.
I know you guys are mainly console, but have you heard anything about problems with PC activation? I cant get my key to work.
Please tell me if Rico ever gets to make sweet love to Bolo Santosi. I want to hear the voice acting on that.
The 360 version doesn’t have YouTube capabilities?
SNOLA you aren’t interested in this one? Do you like action games?
I cant wait to get my hands on this game. I’m hearing so much love for it.
I feel right through the island today. Until now, I really hadn’t seen any bugs in the game.
Not the kind of game I usually enjoy, but the review was pretty damn good.
He just likes the one where they take out the best parts 😛
