Rob’s Pick: During the early 2000s, I spent an unhealthy amount of time prowling a simulated Shuto Expressway thanks to the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series. But over time, multiplayer-based racing dominated, pushing the solitary thrills of racing, tuning, and buying a garage full of imports onto the sidelines. This week, Genki (the franchise’s original developer) makes a welcome return with the Early Access release of Tokyo Xtreme Racer. So far, the fundamentals seem intact, with the grind of beating rival racer so you can purchase upgrades making an essential return. I’ll have a full review in the next few days.

The nostalgic in me won’t be able to resist Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. When I wasn’t tearing through the streets of Tokyo after dark, I was playing the hell out of SEGA’s intricate fighter. While SEGA’s DLC practices feel grimy (Yes, the core DLC packs cost more than the main game), the inclusion of rollback netcode and 4K visuals are a decent trade-off.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): What a start to the year, huh? I’m still trying to recover from just how good Dynasty Warriors Origins was. What a brilliant new chapter in that series. But we’re here to talk about this week, and I’m rather looking forward to Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos. I always enjoy a good Neptunia game, so hopefully this one is a return to form for a series that has been a bit patchy recently.

On a very (very) different note I’m very keen on checking Achilles: Survivor out. It’s been a long time since I’ve got my sword-and-sandals on, and this looks like a good and high-octane take on this particular legend of mythology.

Ryan’s pick: I always enjoyed some of the rendered liminal space feeds that are on Instagram as they are usually pretty creepy and give off an odd ominous vibe. Dreamcore captures this motif really well, and the camera effects and motion give this horror game an almost dream-like first-person experience that I think looks pretty unique. It looks like the gameplay mainly revolves around exploration, but I’m still pretty curious to see what type of environments are in this one.

PvPvE extraction shooters are typically not at the top of my list when looking for a new game, but SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada may be an exception. Outside occasional co-op sessions with friends typically prefer single-player experiences, so I do like the fact that this one can be played as a lone wolf. In general, the anime-inspired art looks good and the story’s premise is interesting so I may give this one a try. Also Diablo IV’s season 7 began this week, so maybe it’s time to roll a Bloodwave Necromancer.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.
