Rob’s Pick: From being my first console RPG, receiving a slime controller for my PlayStation 2 as a holiday gift, to seeing Lawson’s completely coated by Akira Toriyama’s iconic artwork, Yuji Horii’s series has produced so many salient memories. One of my favorite recollections might be the summer playing Sentinels of the Starry Skies in the backyard with my dog on my lap.
While I missed the release of 1992’s Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation, I did play the third entry when the 2001 Game Boy Color Port was released, burning through a few packs of AA batteries before finally vanquishing evil and earning the title of “Erdrick”. Looking back, that was one of the games that solidified my adoration for Japanese role-playing games. I can’t wait to renew those feelings with the HD-2D remake. Hopefully, I’ll be able to squeeze in some time for Maid Cafe on Electric Street. I’ve often longed to manage a maid café in the digital world. Let’s hope it lets me jack up those prices for lackluster omurice and pictures with the girls.
Ryan’s pick: I’m not one to pass up a chance to try out a new fighting game, especially ones that only existed in the arcades. Rage of the Dragons was released in the arcades back in 2002 and was intended to be a fighter featuring the characters from Double Dragon however due to licensing the game needed pivot and include a different cast of new characters. There are still some light remaining homages to the Double Dragon series in the game, so I am planning to give Rage of the Dragons NEO this week as I really like the sprite work.
The roguelike genre continues to innovate as its popularity grows, and RAM: Random Access Mayhem does exactly that. The part about this one that has me interested is you have the ability to swap between the enemies to take control of a new host as you fight through the levels. It seems like a pretty interesting mechanic, and I’m definitely curious how this plays out with boss fights. One final nod goes to Struggle F.O. which features anime-inspired art and is an action RPG. I like the character designs and there are slight hints of some bullet-hell inspired boss fights, so this could also be worth a quick look.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): This is an easy one this week. Dragon Quest III was a game that was well ahead of its time. Now it has the HD-2D remake treatment it looks and feels like a game from today. Sure, the combat system is classical, but in terms of storytelling, world building, and everything that we love about Dragon Quest, this could as easily be Dragon Quest XII as III.
I’m also very keen at checking out this Goblin Slayer game. I don’t know that much about the anime, truth be told, other than it’s 1) controversial and 2) dark fantasy. I can guess why 2) has resulted in 1). However, what catches my interest with this game is that it’s a tactics RPG, and I always have time for tactics RPGs. As long as it does a baseline job of introducing me to Goblin Slayer I’m quite sure I’ll enjoy this game a great deal.
