New Releases 11/14-11/20: Roads and Rome Edition

You thought the tag-team efforts of the Playstation Move and Kinect would slow the Wii’s ambitions down? It appears unlikely- games for the original motion-based console account for nearly half of this week’s new releases. Despite these impressive aspirations, the amount of games designed for a youthful demographic is exceedingly high. Is this relegating Nintendo hardware to being little more than a ‘kid’s machine’ in the public perception?  We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

DesertEagle’s Pick: Asking me to abstain from either the exploration of Roman Renaissance rooftops or the latest Criterion-developed full-contact racing game might be be a violation of my Eight Amendment rights. The release of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit should keep me occupied to the new year.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: After our interview with the guys over at Aksys, I checked out the online demo for Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and I’m hooked!  After almost a month of wondering, I absolutely can not wait to find out what happens next!  Also, the Super Hero Squad Captain America figure on top of my monitor is reminding me that The  Infinity Gauntlet hits this week. I enjoyed what I played of the first one, and I’m looking forward to playing this one as soon as the price drops.

TideGear’s Pick: I’m not very excited by this week’s releases, but there’s some interesting titles in the bunch like Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Miniland Mayhem, Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and, yes, even Sonic Colors. My love for stealth games, however, makes Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood my pick, despite my being horribly behind on the series.

  1. AC:B for me. I can’t wait.

As for Nintendo, I think they’ve always been thought as a kiddy console. But some of these new Barbie and Elmo games are going to make it even worse.

  2. So they’re stretching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two games?

I doubt it will be as good as the Lego one?

  3. I think Nintendo really needs to clamp down on all this 3rd party crap flooding the console. It could kill it.

  4. I don’t know about anyone else, but I pretty much only buy 1st Party Nintendo stuff. The game made by others (With the exception of maybe EA and Activision) are usually crap.

  5. I heard the only thing to eat at Pac-Man Party is pellets and vitamins.

You’ve been great. Don’t forget to tip your waitress.

  6. WTF is Barbie Groom and Glam Pups?

She’s a groom now marrying multiple dogs? See what you did California?

    (I kid)

  7. Thanks for turning me onto Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. The demo was cool and creepy.

  8. The Hot Pursuit demo was pretty cool. Hopefully, I have enough credit to get the game this week.

  9. Are you supposed to play Pictionary DS with yourself?

I never understood why people would pay $15 for the Pictionary board game- it’s just paper and pens. Now, why the hell would they pay $30 for the Wii version?

  10. Reggie Fils-Aime, the main man over at Nintendo of America, has gone on the record saying that Nintendo will do very well during this holiday season, despite the fact that rivals have some really great offerings as well. When speaking during the BMO Capital Markets Annual Digital Entertainment Conference in New York today, he said that Nintendo has the edge during Christmas time due to brand recognition.

“The holidays are more important to Nintendo than to other manufacturers. We have a distinct edge when it comes to gift-giving, and it’s no doubt because of the familiarity and recognition of both our brand and key franchises,” he said.

He went on to say that the majority of their hardware sales in 2009 were during the last two months of the year, with Nintendo getting 60% of their sales during said period, while other manufacturers only reached about 40%.

He also claimed that the same holds true for software, saying that Nintendo had 44% of their software sales during the holiday season, while competitors only got around 33%.

“[Nintendo expects] the same kind of advantage here at the end of 2010,” he said. “From a Nintendo perspective, we have two red bundles in the marketplace that we didn’t have last year. We’ve already begun getting a broad range of products for consumers.”

The biggest games for Nintendo to pin their hopes on are Wii Party, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and the much-awaited revival Donkey Kong Country Returns.

  11. Is Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet supposed to be any good. The first one was pretty average.

  12. typical PR statement that really doesn’t say anything beside pumping their own products.

“we have two red bundles in the marketplace that we didn’t have last year”

Wow, a RED XL and a 4 year old game? revolutionary!!

  13. Reload has been on the new release list for three weeks now. Why do you guys think its going to come out this week?

  14. Does anyone care about The Sims anymore? I haven’t heard anything about the PS3/360 version.

  15. This week Rockin’ Android is thinking about picking us sequel rights to Barbie Groom and Glam Pups, Sesame Street: Elmo’s A to Zoo, and iCarley 3.

The whole Japanese Indie stuff just isn’t as popular as dolls, red puppets and Miranda Cosgrove.

  16. Thinking about grabbing Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Miniland Mayhem. Where have the Nintendo reviews been lately?

  17. You must have been moonlighting and saw my pre-order in the computer. Cheater!

  18. We covered Wii Party, Art Academy and talked about Kirby Epic Yarn on the podcast.

I’ll try to cover Nintendo first-party titles as regularly as possible.
