Rob’s Pick: For a long time, Broforce’s chaotic run-and-gun action was unrivaled. That changes with the release of South Korea-based Eggtart’s Metal Suits: Counter-attack, which sends players gunning their way through 2D stages swarming with enemies and explosives. Although you can’t cheese the bosses, all the bit-mapped bedlam is here. Similarly, Guns of Fury looks rather promising, channeling the mayhem of the Metal Slug series.
For those who aren’t as enamored by explosions, Shujinkou deserves your attention. One of the enticements is the Etrian Odessey-esque dungeon crawling. But far more noteworthy is how the game teaches Japanese. Even if you’re a Nihongo noob who’s never followed Mary and Takeshi’s exploits in the Genki textbooks, the game also functions as an educational tool – teaching katakana, hiragana, as well as words written out in romaji.
Ryan’s pick: Female protagonists with gray hair are my weakness, so my vote goes to PROJECT TACHYON this week. Visually the game reminds me ever so slightly of Strider which was released back in 2014, but instead of metroidvania mechanics it employs roguelike features. My hope is that it has some of the same appeal that Dead Cells has but with more of a sci-fi feeling. I really like this particular genre as I typically enjoy the games in small bursts, as it really does take a long time to memorize enemy and boss telegraphing to get proficient.
My honorable mention goes to Tiny Pasture this week as I really like the idea. Casually interacting with small pixel animals positioned at the very bottom of your screen when you are working on other things on the computer sounds like a fun idea, and having to lightly manage and interact with them from time to time could be a good way to help take a needed break when you’re super focused. If you like different experiences compared to a normal fullscreen game, give this one a look.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I’ve become a bit of a tragic for The Legend of Heroes series, so naturally I’m in love with the latest release in it. Every time I start to wonder if the developers of tapped out of stories for their ever-evolving epic, they go and surprise me, draw me back in, and hook me totally. Trails through Daybreak II is exquisite JRPG action.
Speaking of “exquisite”, “good” and “JRPG action,” I’ve also got to cheer for Shujinkou. It’s a dungeon crawler, and it’s perfectly fine on that level alone, but as Robert says, it’s also a handy learning tool, especially for those early on in their Japanese language journey. The Duolingo Owl is well and truly dead with this slice of joy out there.
Finally, it is technically from the previous week, but it was a stealth drop via Sony’s State of Play, but I can’t wait to dig into the “bonus” Dynasty Warriors Roguelike that just landed. Less than a month after the superb Dynasty Warriors Origins, too… Koei Tecmo is spoiling us.
Trails through Daybreak II for me.
