This week, Macross -Shooting Insight- and Under Defeat provide plenty of foes to shoot down, while Quilts and Cats of Calico tasks players with making a feline-alluring quilt from patterned fabric scraps. Rob’s pick: I enjoy the occasional evening steering the Aztecs toward a cultural victory in Civilization. But for someone who appreciates the thorny complexities of the series, VII’s streamlining seems geared toward acquiring new players rather than rewarding returning ones. Oddly, there’s a shortage of on-screen data and context, resulting in a rather aimless outing for Firaxis Games.
Instead of exercising my brain, I’ll be giving my trigger finger a vigorous workout with both Under Defeat and Macross Shooting Insight. The former is G.rev’s vertically-scrolling heli-shooter, that allows you to change your firing angle. The latter offers different kinds of action, from free-roaming sections to side-scrolling, as you dodge and shoot through dense clusters of enemies and projectiles. The inability to transform on the fly is odd, but Spacy veterans might appreciate the character portraits used for between-mission dialog.
Ryan’s pick: Outside the occasional shmup I typically don’t find myself dabbling with games that take place in space. I think I can partially blame my penchant for gacha games which typically are more character focused instead of putting emphasis on vehicles. Reality Break gets my official nod this week for having a lot of interesting mechanics built into this space ARPG. I’m specifically interested in the Rewrite mechanic the game has, where it allows players to reset their timeline which affects various nuances in the game. Seems pretty fun and visually I like the perspective with the space battles.
Almost everyone I know often gives me the stink eye when in conversation I casually admit to never playing any of the Civilization games. I suppose there’s no better time than right now with the next installation releasing this week. I am most likely missing out and it’s time to fix that. I’m also still playing through Season 7 in Diablo IV with my Blood Wave Necromancer. This season is pretty satisfying and in general I really like the implementation of the elusive Forgotten Altars.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Without a doubt I’m excited to check out Civilization VII. This series was foundational to me – as far back as Civilization II I have consumed every title with hundreds of hours of gusto. I am intensely worried about it based on what Rob wrote, but I absolutely must see this for myself anyway.
I got nothing else this week. If Civilization VII sucks I’m going to have many, many harsh words to say. I need it to be my game of 2025.
From what I’ve seen Rob seems to be right about Civ7. Kind of disappointing to hear.
A year ago I would have ignored Quilts and Cats of Calico. Now Its the one game on this list that I want to play.
