New Releases 2/6-2/12: No Time to Chill Edition

Despite the abundance of snow, rain, and winds outside, this week’s new releases promises a cathartic dose of escapism. Why not travel to the sun drenched islands of Oahu or Ibiza to tear up the local tarmac in Test Drive Unlimited 2? Even Mario Sports Mix‘s shore-side volleyball courts are rendered with enough blistering sand to make gamers forgot about wind-chill factors. Cumudguns who prefer to endure the freezing temperatures may find enjoyment in Stacking‘s Matryoshka Dolls- a plaything which kept many Russians amused through those inhuman Siberian winters.

DesertEagle’s Pick: I’ve always found first-party Nintendo titles hard to resist, and Mario Sports Mix is no exception. Although each of the recreations on the disk is simple, it’s hard not to appreciate Yoshi’s high-flying, slack-tongued dunks. Podcast listeners know I like trivia- and Cookie Masterson delivers some of the best in You Don’t Know Jack, my co-pick.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: I always wondered what happened to the You Don’t Know Jack series.  I was always a big fan, and I’m glad to see it back, but I wonder if it can still hold a candle to Buzz.

Samurage’s Pick: Honestly, I’d like to see how Earthrise plays out.  It
has all the right elements; post-apocalyptic world, warring factions,
corporate government vs. an anti-authoritative group, mutants posing a
deadly threat, and cloning.  It also offers on and off line play.  Plus,
it’s from a Masthead studios, one of those indie developers capable of releasing massive games.  The graphics may not be
super-awesome, but it looks pretty, and I’m hoping that the mechanics
and storyline play out well. I’m excited to see how it does.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. Stacking will be free to PS+ subscribers, you can bet I’m getting that one! You can’t beat free.

  2. Nice reflection is that shot. Too bad I didn’t really like the first TDU that much.

  3. Where’s Baby Maker Extreme 2, the true pick of the week because it’s only a dollar.

It has a brand new graphics engine, new places to explore, new items to crash into, new outfits, and “super power babies” that offer new ways to control the infants flying across stages. Get it!

  4. I hope Tecmo brings some Souls of Zill O’ll DLC (Free) our way. That was the push I needed for DW6.

  5. Just Jack, nothing but Jack.

Ok, I’ll try the stacking demo, but I think it might be a bit too sedate for me.

  6. I see Ripten even borrows from your intros now.

You should make up a title and see if they copy it.

  7. Don’t get me started on those plagiarist piles of waste.

Actually, I have made small mistakes. An errant colon here or there, the inclusion of a delayed game. Each time it gets copied by the same bastard.

  8. Tonight’s high of 24 is warm compared to two nights ago when it was -11. The worst part is that ISN’T normal for us, so it screwed a lot of ppl up. 10,000 people lost natural gas and had their pipes freeze.

  9. I hear second hand that since it’s designed for the PC it’s pretty bomb, but that the camera angles are occasionally awkward. I haven’t played it yet though, so I can’t vouch for that.

  10. Hey it’s not the guys’ fault, I just hadn’t gotten on top of making a pick for up-coming games yet. 🙂 Glad you’re happy.

  11. So If I join PS+, play Stacking, then quit a few months later, do I get to keep the game? PS+ is still confusing to me.

  12. I let my subscription lapse and checked out what I downloaded, and what I found was that it varied. Sam & Max still worked, and pretty much everything that I paid for (at the discount) still worked, but most of the other free stuff stopped working.

  13. Nonononono, sorry, I was unclear – everything I paid for still worked, MOST of the stuff I got for free did not. Sam & Max was the one exception that I can think of.

The frustrating thing is that when you have PS+, you don’t have the option to pay for free content, which means if you drop your subscription, you have to remember which stuff you already paid for before the subscription started, and which stuff you need to delete, pay for and redownload.
