Rob’s pick: One of the biggest non-surprises of 2025 might be how quickly I fell for Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land. No, not just because Yumia Liessfeldt is impossibly adorable but more about how alchemy is stigmatized in Aladiss. Sure, the villains are a bit too simple, but the chemistry that Yumia concocts with the main cast is thoroughly engaging, especially when the plot grows a bit dark. As a plus, base-building feels right at home for the franchise.
As a fan of the original games, I’m looking forward to Gal Guardians’ sophomore effort. Inti Creates’ action-platformers are comfort food for me, between the gorgeous sprite art and the spectacle of boss showdowns. And who doesn’t appreciate a Metroidvania with a machine gun? Finally, Wreckfest 2 is arriving this week, and given my appetite for automotive mayhem, I’ll be going all gas no brakes on this one.
Ryan’s pick: The clear winner this week is Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land. I have a lot of love for this series and in every new evolution of the series it’s clear GUST continues to propel the series forward both graphically and through likeable characters. These games are unique from other RPGs in that they balance collecting/synthesis, battle, and character building pretty well, which to a certain extent lets you play the game how you want to. For completionists there’s typically multiple endings included, so there is also plenty of content. In general, I think this one will be worth its weight in Cole.
Two other games releasing on Steam caught my eye, the first being the tower defense strategy game Nordhold which is coming on steam on March 25. I really like the visuals and the hexagon-based level grid, and it seems like it will be able to offer some decent replayability. I’m in full agreement with Robert that Gal Guardians looks good. The sprites and animations are pretty polished, plus it’s been a few months since my last dance with a metroidvania which was the Castlevania Dominus Collection. This is a definite pick-up for me on Steam Deck.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Without a doubt, Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land is the game of this week. It’s a different Atelier, as Koei Tecmo continues to explore new ideas and ways to expand the series beyond its hyper-cute roots, but it really works. Yumia is an excellent protagonist, the world is a delight to explore, and the whole “what if people hated alchemy” scenario is a nice way to change up the role of the leading lady in her world. The only downside to the game is that it really doesn’t run well on Switch, so only consider that version if the portability really is that important to you.
I’m also looking forward to giving Bleach Rebirth of Souls a whirl. I’m a long-lapsed Bleach fan, but it’s been a while since there’s been a game to sink my teeth into, and Tamsoft, the developers of this one, are usually pretty reliable for their anime-style brawlers. Will it be the best thing I play this year? Probably not. But I do expect to have fun with it and find myself catching up on all the Bleach I’ve been missing over the last years.
Yummy, yummy Yumia.
