Rob’s Pick: I thoroughly enjoyed Aokana – Four Rhythms Across the Blue, partially for its imagined athletic game but also due to Suzumori’s artistry. It was achingly beautiful to look at, but also many of the CGs helped to bring Masaya, Asuka, Misaki, Mashiro, and Rika to life. As such, I’ll definitely be indulging in Love, Elections, and Chocolate, which officially brings Sprite’s visual novel stateside for the first time since its 2010 release.

Last week, I mentioned Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark, a Maidvania which arrived on Steam in time a day before the console releases. Expectedly, I’m having a lot of fun with it, thanks to an expansive map and Kirika’s sub-machine gun. At present, the game neglects to impart some important details like which sub-weapons are needed to open gated-off areas. But that seems like an easy fix for the Inti Creates team.

Ryan’s pick: I always have room for another soulslike, so The First Berzerker: Khazan is my go-to game this week. There is a demo on PS5 which was where I first got a chance to play it, Overall, the game does a decent job of melding various unique mechanics from other games in the genre like withering down enemy guard blocking as seen in Lies of P, mixed with a bit of necessary blocking on the player side which was found in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The boss in the demo felt like a pushover until it went Neo Bahamut on me in its second phase, so if you’re looking for something to tide you over until the release of the next Elden Ring DLC then give the demo for this one a try.

X-Out Resurfaced gets the honorable mention this week because I really loved a lot of the shmup games that were released on PC and Amiga back in the day. I missed the Steam release of the game last month, so now that it’s coming to PS5 this week it’s worth a look. One other final mention goes to the visual novel Mojika – Truth Rears Its Ugly Head. It seems a bit more psychological than most VNs out there and has a pretty unique style and visual feel. The subject matter may be a bit more heavy than usual, but I tend to enjoy these types of stories when compared to typical fanservice VNs.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): You know, I have never actually played I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, despite just about everyone I know having told me to play it at some point or another. The game has obtained one hell of a sense that it’s a masterpiece about it, and now that it’s on Switch I really have no excuse. I’ll give it a go.

On a (very) different note, I am a hardcore fan of the art that went into Aokana. I played it on Switch first and then, I’ll admit, I went and bought it on PC to because I wanted to see the… extras, with such an incredible artist behind them. When I realised that Love, Elections, and Chocolate has the same artist, I know where my eyes will be.
