Rob’s pick: Although Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest was my very first RPG, it was the storytelling of Suikoden that truly made me fall for the genre. Where previous efforts had moderately-sized casts, KCET’s ensemble of 108 warriors truly felt epic, with most having their own motivations and ambitions. Meanwhile, the game’s plentiful subplots provided a complexity that felt more literary than many of the console games of the era. Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is an easy recommendation for me.
Visual novel fans shouldn’t overlook Never17/Ever17. From time travels to groups of teens in secluded environments, the games likely has some influence on everything from Steins;Gate to Danganronpa. Given they were penned by Kotaro Uchikoshi, similarities with the Zero Escape series are also evident, especially with Out of Infinity’s looming disaster. Lastly, I’m hoping Dragonkin: The Banished is a worthwhile ARPG; I need something to replace Heroes of Hammerwatch II during morning commutes.
Ryan’s pick: Metal Bringer gets the bid this week for mixing mechs and heavy customization into an isometric action-rpg. The part that really hooked me on the game is just like in Cyborg Justice on Genesis you are able to pick up enemy parts and use them on the fly. I also like that you aren’t necessarily tied to being in a mech the whole time, and you have the option to use an android to slash through mobs instead. It looks like there’s a whole lot going on in the screen, but I tend to like all sorts of various numbers and effects exploding on screen like in Diablo IV. In general, this one looks awesome, so please give it a look.
The honorable mention goes to Suikoden I&II HD remaster. I missed both back when they were released on PlayStation. I think back then I was more into action and or multiplayer games that could be played with friends, and it wasn’t until FFVII and Parasite Eve that I got back into RPGs on that console. If you are an RPG fan and haven’t tried this series, definitely give it a look.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Without a doubt,Care Bears: To the Rescue is the game I’m looking forward to the most. We don’t see enough Care Bears in video games, and this title looks like it has it all, with the action platforming and seven playable bears and co-op for up to four players. I can easily see myself getting a group of mates together for some serious gaming jams with this title…
Okay, perhaps not. My real pick this week goes to Ever 17/Never 7 Double Pack, which are two excellent visual novels from the guy that would go on to do the absolutely brilliant AI: The Somnium Files and its sequel (among so much else). Lovingly remastered by the ever-versatile MAGES, they are incredibly difficult to put down. Real page turner stuff, written with intelligence and looking a million bucks.
I’m also naturally going to recommend Suikoden I&II HD Remaster this week. Based on the classic Chinese novel, Water Margin (an absolute must-read and I would argue even better than Romance of the Three Kingdoms), Suikoden has characters in spades, excellent classical combat systems, and an exceptional narrative. Who knows? Konami may even be releasing this to gauge interest in reviving the property and on that basis, I would live to see every person on this planet buy a copy. The world deserves to have Suikoden back.
I’m glad someone cares about the Care Bears.
I feel like I see Aery – Dream Land on this week every week.
