Rob’s Pick: Intelligent System’s Wars series might be one of gaming’s most influential turn-based strategy games. It’s accessible but also provides a bit of mental exercise (have you worked out today?). This week, Warside retains the cartoonish combatants, colorful battlegrounds, and those delightful split-screen cinematics that manage to make armed confrontation look adorable. This is my propaganda of choice.
I’ll take another look at Nikoderiko: The Magical World this week. The original releases flaunted some solid looking platforming, but I didn’t find the action all that compelling given the dull level design. I’m always hoping an underdog is able to turn things around, No Man’s Sky-style. Let’s see if the Director’s Cut can redeem Nikoderiko.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): There’s really not that much there for me this week. One that I have had on my radar, however, is Lushfoil Photography Sim. I am a big fan of landscape and natural photography, so this “Pokémon Snap but real bushwalking” sim might just be what I need for chillout sessions for a while. One day I’d like a genuine fashion/art model photography sim too (no, I do genuinely mean that – light balances and graded photos and all that, not Dead or Alive), but for now Lushfoil will scratch my virtual photography itch.
I’ll also give Warside a fair shake, though it straddles and dangerous line between homage and just outright plagiarism. Though I guess in the era where you can turn your photos into a “Studio Ghibli animation” people don’t care much about authenticity any more… Warside would have been so much better if it had its own identity, is my point. That said, at least the developers have tried to get it right and it plays well.
Ryan’s pick: Blue Prince came up in discussion earlier today as we were talking about escape rooms and after some investigating this one is the clear choice for me. I’ve never been able to turn down an FPS puzzle game, and my personality type is I’ll meticulously continue to try and figure things out until I get it, so this one looks like a perfect fit. Overall, I think that there is going to be a lot to like about this one if you enjoy games with investigation and exploration. I’m particularly interested in the procedural generation as it sounds like the house you are exploring resets each morning at dawn, which sounds like a pretty fun mechanic.
I missed the first Monaco, but I really like Monaco 2’s new 3D style and after playing a bunch of R.E.P.O lately I have been having a lot of fun with the looting mechanics so this one looks equally as fitting for me. It was recently brought to my attention that my prowess with hero shooters has been lacking, so I also wanted to give a brief nod to Wild Assault as it looks like a good one to try. It’s made in the Unreal Engine and overall, the character models and animations look great. The anthro hero cast may not be for everyone, but if you are into PVP shooters then definitely give it a look.
Looks like a skip week for me.
