Rob’s pick: I’m happy that Stellar Blade is finally here. Not just because I’m especially eager to play Shift Up’s title, which showed potential in the recent demo. Hopefully the release means that’s the discourse can shift away from rather inconsequential matters like Eve’s butt. Sure, it’s round and lovely, but I feel that what Stellar brings to the third-person action genre is the far more interesting talking point.
Similarly, when Class of Heroes was released in 2009, it seemed like many of the well-known reviewers of the day had missed the point. I remember some criticized the dungeon crawler for goading players into grinding, which is like criticizing a dog for having four legs. Both the original and the sequel gave me exactly what I wanted, allowing me to cultivate a party of adventurers into boss-beating badasses. Sure, I could replay the PSP titles, but the releases of Class of Heroes 1 and 2 let me carry one less system around. Stamina -1, Intelligence +2.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): As someone that can still play the original Wizardry in all its retro glory and love it, my big pick this week is not the boobie game, but rather Class of Heroes 1 and 2. Give me 100 hours of step-by-step dungeon crawling and grinding combat against monsters over over-inflated airbags any day (I kid, I kid. Stellar Blade is actually very good even if it needed a boob slider for the FIJ crew).
Otherwise, you all have no idea how much I’m looking forward to Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board. I am a big (BIG) Mario Party fan, and I played Demon Slayer Party at Tokyo Game Show last year. It was actually one of the highlights. As long as the whole game can be as delightful as the 30-minute demo, I’m going to get a lot of value out of that one.
Ryan’s pick: Action-RPGs continue to be my go-to genre lately across various platforms, so my official pick goes to Stellar Blade this week. Many of the RPGs I’ve been playing are gatcha-based, so I am looking forward to this one as its mechanics and difficulty hinge on more than a simple singular dodge, which is the change of pace in terms of difficulty that I’m looking for. Open-world exploration is also one of my favorite parts of playing this genre, so I think I’ll be right at home with this one.
I must say that Sand Land also looks pretty impressive and fun. If you are a fan of any of Akira Toriyama’s works, then I think that this is one to investigate. The part that I like about the battle is it incorporates vehicle-based action which also helps differentiate it from my other pick where the action centers around a singular person. Lastly, for those who play Genshin Impact best of luck for all those wishing for Arlecchino this week with the 4.6 debut. I think I’m going to hold out for Chlorinde.
Class of Heroes, I’m going for you!
I’ll pick up TopSpin is Zendaya is playable. Mmmm.
You cowards didn’t use some Stellar Blade screenshots for the top picture.
