Rob’s Pick: The fundamental problem with most video poker games is that there’s little actual payoff. All in Abyss: Judge the Fake fixes this by doling out bits of visual novel-style storytelling after a winning night. Here, Asuha plots revenge against a hustling witch who took a victory bite from her back after a Texas Hold-em match. Like many of Acquire’s efforts, there are a lot of interesting mechanics at play, from Balatro-style power-ups that provide clues to your opponent’s cards, RPG-like menus, and even some fighting game influence when wagering.
If gambling isn’t your thing, Snow Bros 2. Special deserves your attention. Unlike Snow Bros. Wonderland this isn’t a 3D reimagining but more of an update with bosses that will make you and your bros (or Snow sis) scream.
Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): I mean it has “Waltz” right there in the title. Never mind that it’s not actually about the dance (at least, as far as I’m aware), I’m going to support Battlefield Waltz for entirely self-promotion reasons (the more people that see “Waltz” in games the better The Last Waltz will go when I release it, something something – Sorry, Robert :D). But also in all seriousness, I love Otomate games, and Battlefield Waltz does look like a very good otome, with stunning art and a strong fantasy premise. I’m quite sure I’ll find it totally compelling.
For a second pick this week… I’ve never actually played Snow Bros. 2, despite being the world’s absolute biggest fan of the original. I don’t know why, and I don’t know how, but I’ve just never loaded it up. I’m definitely going to remedy that with this release. More Snow Bros. is a very good thing.
Ryan’s pick: A little levity goes a long way, so Snow Bros. 2 is my choice this week. I missed out on this series in the arcades, and I’m kind of regretting it now as character sprites and enemies are nothing short of spectacular in terms of how odd and funny they are. I don’t have many chances lately to play coop, but that’s another thing that the game has going for it in that up to four can play at once. The Monster Challenge Mode also sounds pretty fun, as there’s not many platformer games out there that let you play as the monsters.
I had a lot of fun playing Vampire Survivor in that it satisfied my desire to keep collecting and unlocking characters each time I played. Nomad Idle sounds like an interesting premise in that the game automatically plays itself instead of having to control the characters. You have the ability to level up and make decisions on character progression, and while it’s a bit of a bummer you don’t control much, it is an interesting idea and doesn’t require as much eye strain as lots of things are happening on the screen at once. This won’t be for everyone, but those that are used to gacha games playing themselves, this may be your cup of tea.
Snow Bros 2 is the reviews are good.
