Resident Evil Revelations

For those who have waited to pull the plug on the Capcom Arcade Cabinet, this week the publishing powerhouse offers an extra inventive for players considering the purchase of the fifteen-game retro compilation. Naturally, our retro-loving readership  likely already own these titles, as both were available on the PS2 and Xbox iterations of the Capcom Classics Collection and on the PSP via the Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded anthology.

Robert’s Pick: If the afterlife produces a pie-chart that reveals how I squandered away my time on this planet, a significant section of the graph will be devoted to the Worms franchise. This week’s release of the Worms Collection brings the original game, Worms 2: Armageddon, and Worms: Ultimate Mayhem (and six DLC packs) into one tidy amalgam of antagonistic Annelida and artillery. While the package isn’t as comprehensive as Steam’s 17- title Worms Collection, it’s also a fraction of the price.

Worms Ultimate Mayhem

Say’s Pick: Resident Evil: Revelations for PC. I never got a chance to play it when it first came out on 3DS, but now that the title is being ported to PC, I’m looking forward to this frightening experience. Boosted by attractive aesthetics, as well as a storyline that’s closer to the intensity of Resident Evil 4, the game looks to get the series back on track. Throw in extra enemies and a new difficulty mode called “infernal Mode” and next week going to be spend kicking some zombie ass!

Resident Evil Revelations (2)

Jeremy’s Pick: As a repeated Masters of Magic and Age of Wonders recidivist, I’ve put more than my share of time into Stardock’s Elemental games on PC. The fantasy-empire-building-tactical-RPG has undergone several iterations since its 2010 release as Elemental: War of Magic. After a critically poor reception, it relaunched last October as Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, and receives its first expansion, Legendary Heroes, this week. Legendary Heroes continues the game’s refinement toward a more streamlined and character-focused slant, which has won accolades from many who felt the original was unfocused. New powerful “champion” units, a more customizable level tree for your sovereign, and an updated tactical battle system will greet those who are familiar with Elemental OR who play Legendary Heroes as their first experience, as this expansion is completely stand-alone and ready for sorcerer warlords of all experience levels to ascend the throne.

Eric’s Pick: When I was a kid, my only access to Super Metroid was through my local Best Buy’s Super NES demo unit. Playing it over-and-over was one of my favorite pastimes while my mom was busy shopping. It wasn’t until the game’s 2007 re-release on the Wii’s Virtual Console that I actually got to sit-down with the 16-bit classic. It was a magical experience. I thought that paying 800 Wii Points/$8 for it was a steal, and then came the Wii U $.30 promotion. You have the opportunity to get this legendary title digitally for pennies. Hell, walk around a Walmart parking lot with your head down and you’ll find thirty cents in no time. Any hardcore gamer with a Wii U should consider Super Metroid a mandatory purchase at that price.

Super Metroid

Sage’s Pick: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing! Last year at E3 we were unexpectedly pulled into the Van Helsing demo booth, where they fitted us with snazzy red bandanas bearing the VH logo and set us to playing.  While the game lacked some technical finesse, the concept seemed like it could be fun and successful.  This week, I’m happy to see that it looks like the team took the technical issues to task. The trailers make the game seem far more polished than it did last year.  This game looks like a great amalgamation of similar titles from different sources (like Diablo, Torchlight, the Sherlock Holmes movies) with a heart-thrilling heaping of Van Helsing lore. I’m excited to check it out on Steam, and I hope the game is everything the trailers make it out to be.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. I don’t think I’ll get Resident Evil: Revelations, but I’m curious as to how the port turned out.

  2. I saw some deal at Fast & Furious: Showdown at Gamestop. Usually then they do a pre-release deal (and the game is $40) suckage is coming.

  3. So does history recognize Super Ghouls n Ghosts as the best or 2nd best game in the series?

  4. If Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is just a port of the Wii game I’ll pass. Not paying $40 just to play this on another system.
