New Releases 5/16-5/22: Pariahs and Polyps Edition

With antagonists as varied as outlaws, tumors, and photosensitive ne’er-do-wells, you can be sure that this week’s collection of new releases has a bit of something for everyone.  Take solace that any expeditions to vanquish this odd assortment of enemies will be guided by some familiar faces – roughly seventy percent of this week’s titles are sequels.

DesertEagle’s Pick: For the first time in months, I’m anticipating several new releases. While Split/Second already has me captivated, I’m compelled to go with Red Dead Redemption as my pick. The guys from Rockstar rarely disappoint, the this title offers an amazingly detailed Wild West playground for players to explore. Bad guys, consider yourself warned- there’s a new sheriff in town.

SeanNOLA’s Pick: Although I disagree with DEagle that Rockstar “rarely disappoints” me, one game that surpassed my expectations was Red Dead Revolver.  Although Redemption seems to have very little in common with the original title, I am easily swayed by westerns and great soundtracks. I just hope that Red Dead Redemption is less “Grand Theft Horse” and more “A Fistful of Shooters.”

TideGear’s Pick: There’s a lot of promising titles being released this week. Red Dead Redemption sounds great, but I agree with Sean. I’m out if it’s too much like Grand Theft Horse. I’m a fan of the Prince of Persia series, but movie tie-ins always scare me. I’m not usually one for racing games, but Split/Second reminds me of Burnout, and that’s a good thing. I can’t ignore the stand-out indie titles BIT.TRIP RUNNER and AQUA – Naval Warfare either. It’s hard to pick one, but I’m going with Trauma Team. An intense and varied cooperative game sounds like good medicine.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. Yeah Desert, Ping Pong and Midnight Club were weaksauce. I agree with NOLA on this one.

  2. I’m wondering if Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is going to be any good. I’ve heard nothing on it at all.

  3. Is there or is there going to be a Split/second demo?

Internet has been down in my city for a week now.

  4. Desert, no interest in Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow? Did you like the 360 version?

  5. Alan Wake special edition is ready to go. How come you didn’t review that one, guys?

  6. NOLA, which Rock* games didn’t you like? I know Manhunt 2 was just ok, but so many other rocked.

    GTA Series
    Bully
    Midnight Club
    Table Tennis
    Max Payne series (published)

  7. Protip: Most licenses games suck. Stay away unless you’ve read 5t good reviews.

  8. Nice site- thanx for the info.

    I’m buying Split/Second this week.

  9. NOLA gets pun of the week.

And just so you dont feel lonely, Adam…Where’s KARNOV?!?!?

  10. You guys are slacking. Only one “where’s Karnov” before he posts.

Adam, you’ve liking a bit of everything. Has DEagle rubbed off on you?

  11. Adam, you cant recycle NOLA’s joke. Thats not cool, you know! He’ll say Knights of the Nightmare is garbage on the next podcast, you know!

  12. I actually like Table Tennis for what it was- an incredibly deep ping-pong sim.

As for the last MC- we’ll that’s why I said “rarely” and not “never”. I’ll admit, the game was vastly inferior to Burnout Paradise, and was an average at best racer.

BTW- I’ll also defend “The Warriors” if you so require 😉

  13. Haha, being interested doesn’t mean I’m going to necessarily like them.

  14. 3 picks for Red Dead and 2 for Split Second. Nice!

    I’ll get BTR also.

  15. Wheres our Rocket Knight review.

Straight up- total remake or not and is it worth the money?

  16. NOLAs been sticking it to DEAGLE lately. It’s like the whole Garnett and Shane thing all over again, but I don’t know who is who.

  17. Every time all three of you guys don’t pick a Bit.Trip game, the world drifts one step closer to a Justin Bieber game.

    RUNNER is my pick-up!

  18. RockStar has always been a hit-or-miss publisher to me.
I wasn’t a fan of the GTA3-series of games (3, Vice and Andreas) because I felt the core controls were busted. They fixed the controls in 4, but I still didn’t get into it (not because it was a bad game, it just didn’t hold my interest).
Loved Max Payne, but not so much Midnight Club or ManHunt.
Also, Earthworm Jim 3D was pretty unforgivable, but they get a slight pass for only publishing that turd.
    Remember the Austin Powers games?
    Surfing H30?
    State of Emergency?
I’m not saying they are a bad publisher, but they certainly aren’t without a few blemishes in their resume.

  19. When DEagle and I went to the Prince of Persia trailer event, Jordan Mechner said that there were no plans on a movie tie-in game. That was only 6 months ago. I don’t have high expectations for this one.

  20. I guess the difference is the Rockstar publisher games vs. the Rockstar developed games.

Never played the Austin Powers games. Just the title sounds bad.

  21. Yeah VIS made State of Emergency, Opus make H30. Technically, they did make Austin Powers: Welcome to My Underground Lair! so no excuses there!
