Rob’s pick: Lazy publisher cash grabs have made me skeptical of the game reboot/redux/remaster. And lately, Atlus’ eagerness to iterate on almost every one of their accomplishments, rather than develop new experiences, hasn’t reduced my suspicions – especially when DLC escalates the price point. But this week’s release of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance really can’t be faulted. While I thoroughly enjoyed the original release, Atlus’ has listened to those who weren’t happy with the story and made enough variations to justify the creation of an alternative route.

Canon of Vengeance, the new storyline, twists things in unforeseen ways, playfully subverting your expectations if you’ve already made your way through the original route. And given how tragically rare surprises have become in this industry, Vengeance is worth your time this week (and likely the remainer of June).

Ryan’s pick: Isekai anime are a household staple in my realm, and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation sticks out as one of the best in the genre for me. While it’s not as crass as Konosuba, it makes up for that deficit with some really memorable characters and through worldbuilding and storytelling. I’ll typically tread lightly around anime series adaptation games, however the fact that this game is a dungeon crawler really helped to lock this one as my pick this week. Available party members are a lot of the really popular characters from the first season, so put Mushoku Tensei jobless reincarnation Quest of Memories on the radar.

Don’t Shout Together has a pretty creepy VHS and found-footage style that provides an uneasy level of realism to the visuals. One primary mechanic is time progresses as you move, and you need to attempt to escape the level with a party. There are monsters throughout each level that can kill you and serve to provide various jump scares as you explore. Coupled with this is the other main mechanic that if you or any teammates scream (into the mic), a bomb around your character’s neck explodes in the game, and the entire party loses. It seems like a fun one to play at night with the right audience. Slenderman definitely made me yell out loud, so I feel like this one could be a fun test of endurance and self-control.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): Shin Megami Tensei V might not have had the impact that, say, Persona 5 did, but it was a very, very good game in its own right. Given that Vengeance adds another 80-hour narrative arc, and innumerable other improvements, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t play the newer version. Also, Mermaid’s not in HD. Oh, my, Mermaid.

Elsewhere, Monster Hunter Stories is the “light and bubbly” take on the infamously challenging action games, and a delight to play when you’re not in the mood of the hardcore.

Finally, I’m quite keen for El Dorado: The Golden City Builder. I’m in the mood for a city builder, for one thing, as it has been a while since I played one. But also, the mystique of El Dorado fascinates me, so I’m keen to see how that translates in this game.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. SunnySide is one of those cozy farming sims set in the Japanese countryside. Might have to give it a try.
