New Releases for the Week of July 5th-11th, 2013

NCAA Football 14

Between NCAA Football 14’s reminder that the college football season is just weeks away, most of this week’s releases seem rooted in the past, rather than the future. Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection assembles Kojima-san’s twenty-five year legacy of ‘Tactical Espionage Action’, while Nintendo’s latest eShop entries offer a way to revisit Game Gear and SNES-era titles.

Robert’s Pick: For the average PS3 owner, it takes Solid Snake-like prowess to avoid owning at least one Metal Gear title. The series is Konami’s cash cow and over the past few years its udders have been drained to discomfort. That said, Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection is an enticing compilation for the obsessive collector, uniting eight Kojima-directed games, two graphic novels, and a 100-page booklet. I’m doing my best to hold out for The Ultimate Legacy Collection, which would include the aforementioned content as well as the seemingly forsaken turn-based Metal Gear Acid games.

Jeremy’s Pick: I don’t want to get TOO hyped up for Tokyo Jungle Mobile… it is, by all accounts, a simplified strategy game variant of the bold PS3 Pomeranian-themed survival game Tokyo Jungle. On the other hand, that’s sort of what gets me excited about it. Those who have seen information about the surprise release have compared it to Final Fantasy Tactics. Even if the gameplay only vaguely similar, I think it’s worth getting a little amped up for. The PSM platform has had some pretty strong releases lately, and even though it may not set the world on fire (killing all humans and leaving animals to rule the planet), at PSM prices ($2.99) I’m willing to give Tokyo Jungle Mobile the benefit of the doubt.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.

  1. I never played Metal Gear Acid as I had a DS at the time. It did look like something I’d like. MtG mixed with turn-based combat, right?

    1. Turn-based stealth combat with a card system. It was actually really good, except Ac!d 2 was a little bit TOO crazy. Even for a Metal Gear game. I mean, what was up with Snake’s ascot?

  2. Supposedly this is the year that NCAA Football 14 really steps it up. I have to admin I’m pretty excited. I’ll be grabbing my copy on Tuesday.

      1. ” Its the same game every year, dude.”

He’s right, it’s looks exactly the same as when it was Bill Walsh College Football. 😉

    1. The Goat is old & gnarly & he’s
      never been to school,
But He can take the bacon form the
      worn out Army mule;
He’s got no education but he’s
      brimmin full O’fight,
& Bill will feed on Army mule
      tonight!
Army, Army, call the doctor (x3)
      You’re all in down and . . .
Whoa Ensign had a break today,
      no??
      Take one!!
      Army, Army call the doctor,
You’re all in, down & out!

    2. “Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky.
We’ll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh.
Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.”

11 year streak and counting, NOLA!

  3. Full disclosure: I remember seeing the G-LOC cart as a kid, and at the time, I had just discovered rap. I decided to call myself G-Loc for a few weeks in honor.

    1. Gave up the rap game for the Sega game, huh? Don’t feel bad. So did Marky Mark and Kriss Kross.

  4. Nintendo, if you’re listening can we get a Pilotwings sequel for the Wii U? The 3DS version wasn’t bad, but I’m sure the Wii U could give players all kinds of crazy flying machines.

  5. Another GODDAMNED game with DARK in the title?

Add it to Dark Souls, Dark Void, Dark Sector, Dark Messiah, The Darkness, and probably a dozen others.

  6. “The series is Konami’s cash cow and over the past few years its udders have been drained to discomfort.”

Damn, DEagle, you’ve been on a roll lately. First Motorbike, now MGS. Who’s your next target?

    1. He’s getting old and grumpy. It’s only going to get worse from here. XD

  7. I had to look up DARK. There’s a game with next to no hype. Good luck with that.

  8. NCAA reviews aren’t so hot. I’m thinking of cancelling my preorder or moving it to NHL.

    1. Sony’s PlayStation Blog doesn’t even list these. They seems clueless about PS Mobile, once they listed a game as “possibly coming out this week”? How can a company not know what they are doing?

      1. I noticed that too. How do they expect people to buy stuff if they don’t promote it?

I really sorry about Sony sometimes.

      2. I *heard*, but have not verified, that the PS Blog will start adding those to their weekly (or whenever appropriate) schedule.

I won’t hold my breath. Personally I’ve really enjoyed some games on PS Mobile, so it’s not like there’s nothing on the platform…

        1. Between the occasional mention on the PS Blog and you, that’s about the new time I hear ANYONE mention PS Mobile.

Maybe you can get Robert to rotate in some PSM reviews.
