Wanderers, Survivors, and Juliet Starling

This week’s MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection smashes its way onto digital storefronts (a physical copy is arriving in November), Lollipop Chainsaw RePop revisits Suda51 and James Gunn 2012 collaboration. For players who appreciate the pace of turn-based action, Touhou Genso Wanderer -FORESIGHT- (pictured) might accommodate, even if it feels scaled back from its predecessor.

Rob’s Pick: Although Grapple Dog got a bit too frustrating in its waning hours, I thoroughly enjoyed jumping and hooking my way through most of Medallion Games’ platformer. Follow-up Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines injects variety by providing a second playable character. While Pablo’s moveset remains rooted in being able to swing across sections, Luna brings a gun that injects just the right amount of turmoil as you shoot down anything that gets in your way. While the level of challenge is still lofty, it’s fair from what I’ve seen so far.

Elsewhere, UFO 50 feels like one of those shady consoles that compiles dozens of bootleg games. But instead of ROM hacks, you’ll find an anthology of original games. Sure, half the fun is sorting through this digital treasure chest and separating the gems from the chaff. As such, I’m eager to dig into UFO’s depths. Meanwhile, my addiction to roguelike gambling continues to show few signs of weakening. All bets are on giving RP7’s slot managing a try, which looks like this week’s fix.

Ryan’s pick: Nostalgia has taken the wheel this week as I really can’t pass up MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. To this day Iron Man’s Proton Cannon is one of my favorite special attacks in any fighting game, so for that reason alone this has become an easy choice this week. Admittedly I spent all my quarters on Iron Man, so I do plan on diversifying my repertoire of characters that I can coherently play. I have less experience with X-Men vs. Street Fighter, but if my memory serves me correctly, I also really liked Cyclops’ special as well. This also gives me a reason to finally get the HORI stick that I’ve wanted, so this seems like a solid plan.

I’m at the tail end of my Diablo IV Season 5 playthrough and my bash barbarian finally is overpowering the Tormented bosses, so staying with the theme of bosses NanoApostle is worth a quick mention. Granted I think it’ll take some time for me to get used to some of the core mechanics, but I really like the animations and how fast some of the attacks are in this one. Dodge timing appears to also be both rewarded and punished depending on execution, so I think this one may also scratch the souls-like itch I’ve had for a bit now.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): This week is a slam dunk for me: Lollipop Chainsaw was one of my favourite games of the last 15 years. Matching fun action with sublime grindhouse aesthetics and sharp humour, it was a game that subverted expectations at every turn and really stuck in my head. It’s also been one of the most difficult games to actually replay as it was never made available on Steam and had no version that was playable on modern consoles. Now, unfortunately RePOP is inherently inferior: One of the original game’s great qualities was the licenses in the soundtrack and those have been lost. But everything else about the game has been retained, and 95% of Lollipop Chainsaw is still 2000% better than most other games.

Beyond that, I’m also looking forward to The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance ~Memories in Ice, Tearful Figurine~. I think the timing of that was unfortunate given that Famicom Detective Club just released and this is clearly a riff on that type of mystery game, but I also like that “genre” enough that I won’t say no to more of it.

  1. I’m really leaning toward making a portable PC like the Ally X my next console. Sony and MS don’t seem to have a clue.
