Rob’s pick: As evidenced by the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, there are some great contemporary games out there. But industry hubris is producing a lot of titles I have little interest in. As such, most of my recreational hours have been devoted to playing retro titles like Tinkle Pit, Parodius, and occasionally, the infamous Uncle Poo. This week, Cash Cow DX offers another one of those experiences, recreating the appeal of a 1989 arcade game.

With Mappy-style jumping and Sonic the Hedgehog’s speed and looping, Cash Cow simultaneously feels familiar, yet fresh. You’ll likely stumble through your first few efforts to gather all the jewels across the first stage. But gradually, you’ll learn to heed warnings for approaching adversaries and to scan the playfield for dangers, pushing you into the game’s other four levels. When I’m inevitably stuck in Echoes of Wisdom, games like Cash Cow DX can help clear my head.

Ryan’s pick: The dynamic at home is I’m often assigned the role of support for any of The Legend of Zelda games, but I’ve come to enjoy the casual banter and feedback this shared experience causes. It’s been made clear my path will soon cross with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, so I’m making it my official pick. The most recent game in the series we played through was The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, so I’m definitely curious to see what Nintendo and Grezzo have to offer with this new addition.

Also noteworthy is Iron Meat, as it reminds me a whole lot of Contra but also feels like it would have totally been a Sega Genesis release if it was the early 90s. I like both of those facts, so in general this looks like it will be a satisfying side-scrolling shooter. The other game is KILL KINIGHT. I’m on a brief break between Season 5 ending and the new expansion Echo of Hatred beginning in Diablo IV, so this twin-stick action shooter is the perfect way to help keep me on my toes in the meanwhile.

Matt S’ pick (editor, DigitallyDownloaded): This is going to seem like a very humble game in comparison to a lot of the other stuff releasing this week, but I am so, so keen on that Space Invaders Deck Commander – The Board Game. I love Space Invaders so much, and the idea of a board game based on the property really appeals to me. I play Wingspan, Root, Ticket to Ride and a bunch of other board games with my brothers and friends weekly these days, so having another to add to the mix will be well worthwhile (assuming that this one has online multiplayer, of course).

Speaking of multiplayer, my other pick for this week is Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition. Worms Armageddon was right up there with the most played N64 games in my household growing up. It’s endlessly replayable, endlessly funny, and offers a surprising level of tactical depth. And then there are other times where a Holy Hand Grenade is the unsubtle solution to all the problems. Hallelujah!

Finally, as far as single player games go, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom really is all that. For anyone craving a good, classical-style Zelda game, you’ll get it from this game, with the added benefit of the alternative protagonist acting like a breath of fresh air. This has been my favourite Zelda title in quite a few years.
