New Releases for the Week of October 14th, 2012

Veteran players are likely familiar with many of the protagonists featured in this week’s new releases. From the return of gaming’s original space marine in Doom 3 BFG Edition to a visit from everyone’s favorite Gatling-gun toting protagonist- Serious Sam, recognizable faces abound. Hell, even Pyramid Head’s geometrical dome is likely to evoke memories for Silent Hill: Book of Memories‘ fans. Fortunately, this week isn’t completed rooted in nostalgia. New characters such as Chou Chou, the moe-killing schizophrenic with a god complex probably isn’t a persona that most people are used to, unless they’re acquaintances of the Tech-Gaming staff.

DesertEagle’s Pick: Sure, it’s a little odd to for 007 Legends to retcon Daniel Craig into Bond classics like Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Moonraker, Licence to Kill and Die Another Day. But, knowing that Activision secured the likenesses for the actresses that played Holly Goodhead, Teresa di Vicenzo, and M, as well as obtained the voice talents for a number of series’ mainstays has this 007 fan extraordinarily giddy.  As long as players don’t require Legends‘ gameplay to outstrip current FPS standards, I’d expect the game to keep them involved until the free Skyfall DLC becomes unlocked after the film’s release.

007 Legends

BlueSwim’s Pick: It’s hard to believe that enough time has passed to warrant a remake of Doom 3. At release, the survival horror FPS was one of the best looking games to ever hit a console. Now, eight years later, comes Doom 3: BFG Edition, a remastered compilation with enough content to choke a demonic horse. The BFG Edition contains a tweaked, 3D, and graphically improved Doom 3, the Resurrection of Evil expansion, seven new single player levels called The Lost Mission, Doom 1 and 2, and a roll of tape. Not physical tape, mind you, but much needed in-game tape to attach your trusty flashlight to the firearm of your choice. Furthermore, Bethesda has taken the chainsaw to the price tag, slapping a $39.99 sticker on the console versions and a $29.99 MSRP for the PC. Lock the doors, turn off the lights, and go to Hell.

Robert Allen

Since being a toddler, Robert Allen has been immersed in video games, anime, and tokusatsu. Currently, his days are spent teaching at two southern California colleges. But his evenings and weekends are filled with STGs, RPGs, and action titles and well at writing for Tech-Gaming since 2007.
