New Releases for the Week of September 30th, 2012
Gamers can expect a decent amount of deja vu this week. Between HD ports of SEGA standouts Sonic Adventure 2 and NiGHTS into Dreams, an anthology of Command and Conquer titles, as well as New Little King’s Story appearance on PS Vita it might seem as if calling this week’s selection of game ‘new releases’, may be a misnomer. Luckily, experiences such as Resident Evil 6‘s purported reinvigoratation of survival horror or NBA 2K13‘s refinements could demonstrate that current titles can compete with past glories.

DesertEagle’s Pick: Carrier Command: Gaea Mission‘s ambitions of integrating RTS-like tactics and vehicular action certainly has me excited. I’m just hoping that the aging Xbox 360 is able to pull off the engaging picture-in-picture perspective and fluid combat without suffering from performance issues. Still, for those that have a powerful enough gaming rig, Bohemia Interactive’s title deserves a look by strategy fans.
SeanNOLA’s Pick: My girlfriend hates zombies. She won’t let me play The Walking Dead when she’s home, because it will give her nightmares. So it was a surprise to me how excited she go when she saw the Resident Evil 6 commercials on TV. Apparently her hatred of the undead is negated by her love of one Leon Scott Kennedy. As is such, I won’t be able to avoid RE6 this week, as it will become mandatory quality time on the couch.
Samurage’s Pick: Saving money for Dishonored! With the release date already weeks away, and my tarot card edition on pre-order, I’m saving some moola for my E3 pick of the year. However, if I happen to run into some extra money, I’ll pick up Resident Evil 6. There’s always a place in my heart for the Resident Evil series. Some of the titles have been a bit repetitive, but they usually handle the suspense and zombies very well. Five left me a little wanting with its controls and its more action based fps style, but I have hopes that six will restore my love for the series, and feel a little more zombie and a little less like shooting poor people in a third world county. I mean zombies, I mean zombies. Resident Evil 6 looks like its bringing some mega creepy factor back to the game, and I’m willing to give it a try.
BlueSwim’s Pick: “Follow me, set me free! Trust me and we will escape from the city!” Let the haters hate, Sonic Adventure 2 and its soundtrack are great. The game gives you the choice of playing through the story as either the good guys (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) or the bad guys (Shadow, Rouge, and Dr. Robotnik). Sonic/Shadow stages feature traditional 3D Sonic platforming staples like springs, rails, jumping on enemies, and occasionally being chased by a giant Mack truck. The Tails/Robotnik levels focus on using a walking vehicle to shoot foes with missiles. Lastly, stages starring Knuckles or Rouge are treasure hunts, just like in the original Sonic Adventure. The HD re-release will also offer content added for the Nintendo GameCube’s Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as DLC. If you have never played Sonic Adventure 2, now’s a great time to change that.
GLEE zombies are the scariest monsters ever.
I want to play the HD port of NiGHTS into Dreams, but I’m afraid of ruining those perfect memories
I kindof agree too. SEGA’s Genesis ports have been great, but their Dreamcast ports have ranged from middling to pooptastic. I can only imagine what an HD Saturn port will be like…
Yep, I’m almost afraid to find out.
Are the same developer ruining all of SEGA’s classics or is this a team effort?
I can only assume that emulating 16 bit machine is much easier than the messy Saturn hardware.
Agreed.
IS that the Night’s guy or a jumping off-Broadway zombie?
Leaping zombies with stain-proof Dockers require multiple shots to take down. Even then, their pants don’t wrinkle.
They said Leon’s bits would be a return to form for RE6. It looks too action oriented and too dark. I’m wondering if games can still scare.
After playing through the RE6 demo as both Leon Kennedy and Helena Harper, this will be the first RE game I’ll be skipping in a while (I even picked up Operation Raccoon City). The game just didn’t connect with me.
Hopefully, they’ll fix the melee system, too close camera, and polish the controls.
Played the old demo. Played the new demo that was supposed to fix things. I didn’t like either.
Like ORC, I’ll pick this up when it drops to $14.99 at Best Buy’s after Xmas sale.
Something was off in both demos. Graphical weirdness that shouldn’t be happening this late in the generation, controls that feel flighty, even the setting itself.
Someone shoot the RE series in the head. Kill the game, movie, and everything else just to make the world safe.
Haters can hate, but I love the RE games. Even if Leon’s campaign is the highpoint, I want 6.
The War of the Roses beta looks pretty promising. I did get my fill of the game for now, though.
NiGHTS into Dreams and New Little King’s Story if the price is less than $30.
OMFG, there are no NBA fans here? NBA 2K13 is going to be a-maz-ing this year.
I’m with you on NBA. I’ll be grabbing it on Tuesday first chance I get.
Game most likely to have porn with the same name: Remington’s Super Slam Ultimate Sportsman Challenge.
New Little King’s Story has be interested. Carrier Command: Gaea Mission looks kind of cool.
I wouldn’t call Sonic Adventure 2 a standout. It was pretty average.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a stand out in that it’s really the only “good” 3D Sonic game. I’ve got a review incoming, so I don’t want to spoil it here, but suffice to say that if you like SA2, it’s worth it, but if you didn’t, then don’t and if you’ve never played it, it’s not going to change your mind on modern Sonic games.
I happen to like Sonic Generations, especially the 3D sections.
Oh shit, I always forget about Generations. That is a good one. I should go home and play that.
RE6. I know the series isn’t half of what it used to be, but dammit I want to cap zombie ass as Leon Kennedy and mix red and green herbs.
NBA 2K13 looks like the hotness. I’ll be getting it at Midnight.
I’m interested in New Little King’s Story. Hopefully, the price is right.
You know, I want to get Resident Evil 6 but I am a bit tentative. I have missed fighting zombies so I will most likely break down and get it. Let see if this one will impress me.
I’d wait for it to drop.
Speaking of- isn’t Command & Conquer going free?
