Podcast 8-3: Zombies Are So Dead

This week, DesertEagle, Samurage, and BlueSwim welcome the return of SeanNOLA with a discussion of his least liked game antagonist- the zombie. Beyond a conversation about Dead Island, the quartet offers impressions on Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgiven, ClaDun X2, Rise of Nightmares, Scribblenauts, Warhammer 40000: Space Marine, Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, as well as a variety of PSP titles. Additionally, everyone’s favorite ‘hawk rocker presents some of the toughest trivia ever heard on the show- guaranteed to test the wisdom of the savviest zombie/superhero aficionado.

    1. I’m listening to the show right now and I’m a bit confused.

NOLA, did you leave for a bit for work or did you just get burned out on games and the indsustry? I ask because it sounds like the second one. Still, great to have you back.

      1. OK Sean’s back one week and I can feel the whole show changing for the better. The Deus Ex and Dead Island talk were great and I feel wouldn’t only come about with NOLA.

        1. Yep, Sean adds a lot to the show. Don’t listen to the haters, my friend. You got a fan here.

  1. Ain’t nothing wrong with being 19 you old geezers!

    Just kidding- downloading this now!

  2. Hey, wasn’t that the intro song froma few weeks ago?

It’s cool and all, but I thought you guys were switching up the music.

  3. The only game you listen that I’m intersted in is Warhammer 40000: Space Marine. From what I’ve read most reviewers haven’t played or even read up on Warhammer, which is strange.

You’d think that would be a requirement for reviews.

  4. Wow, SeanNOLA’s complements are really touching. Same with Deagle’s all too regular eulogies.

I’ll tell you why the talk is of a higher caliber here. Because it seems like you guys care about games and the site. There’s a lot of sites that will do anything to get hits. You guys make me come back for the reviews and the podcast.

  5. So SeanNOLA talks about the new release hype machine, but aren’t you guys part of the problem by posting a new release list every week and focusing your talk on the most recent releases on the show?

Whatever happened to the segment where you wold all talk about retro game. I’m assuming you got rid of it for something more interesting to your audience.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the site and all…

    1. Actually, I think that just happens to have happened because we do play new games that come out. The new release pick is just in case ppl are interested in what we’d pick of games coming out, but the what you been playing represents what we’ve been playing, new or old. I feel we still do some old stuff, though we could do more, but at least its organic.

Anyway as soon as my computer is accessible again i’ll hit ya over the head with some oldies for sure 🙂

  6. For next week’s show can you answer this:

Team Meat: Crybabies or developers with a legitimate complaint?

  7. As a zombie fan, I really wanted Dead Island to be good. Short take: it isn’t. one button combat feels at least a decade old.

  8. This week’s show was great (glad to have the NO-NO back) but I’ll admit I’m getting used to the interviews. Not having one this week was kind of a bummer.

    1. I’m with you. I like the interview. It breaks up the talking between the hosts. Maybe when Desert is back to being host.

  9. Deagle should have got +5 point instead of -5 for yelling out “Tom Savini”

2009 DCE grad, Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program.

  10. As far as overlap between the comic and gaming audiences I have this to say: I worry about us turning gaming programer into some of the egos that are in comics and Hollywood. What do I mean?

Go to a signing by a big name writer artist or celebrate and at least 75% of the time that act like it’s annoying to meet their fans. Brian Michael Bendis and Bruce Campbell really stand out here. Both have acted like jerks at cons.

With gaming, it’s not usually like that. Most of the time, programmer and designer like to hear how much you enjoy their game.

    1. *Rimshot* XD

The only clothes I’m buying that are Sailor Moon-related is the men’s tee that Hot Topic is going to start selling next month.

    1. I think by saying nothing, we said everything. They didn’t hold my attention for more than 5 minutes a piece, except for NES Open Tournament Golf. I spent 15 minutes with that one. Overall, none of them were worth more than a dollar or two a piece. My Game Boy Advance game expectations are that the five remaining games TBA will mostly disappoint. The “Ambassador” program hasn’t been worth the $80 extra I ended up paying.

      1. I played Ice Climber for about 7 minutes and realized that collision detection has made some serious progress in the last 25 years or so.

Also, I noticed the save options from most EStore titles was missing 🙁

  11. So are you guys not reviewing Dead Island officially? Is it because you weren’t interested in the game or what?

  12. Actually, I think that just happens to have happened because we do play new games that come out. The new release pick is just in case ppl are interested in what we’d pick of games coming out, but the what you been playing represents what we’ve been playing, new or old. 13. I’m about 5 hour into Dead Island, and I have to agree with Deagle. Great engine, good concept, but just not that fun to play. Melee combat over and over and over gets boring real quick. I’m ready to sell this sucker back.

  15. As someone whose tired of the cheap Jordan’s spam and “you suck!!!” message that clog IGN, I’ve found this and a few other indie sites are much better at reviews and dialog. The one thing I would like is see if more of everything. Reviews, videos, even some new and text interviews. It seems like Deagle hasn’t done a video review in a while.

  16. Sage, God and/or Death is stronger than any old zombie!

Also as a “horror” fan you should try “Cthulu”. Also try “Edison” in the first Scribblenauts as well.

  17. I can wait until Dead Island hits the $20 mark. Deep Silver has to patch their stuff anyways.

Can you guys believe that on Steam, Deep Silver released beta code? What were they thinking?

  18. 1) Did you guys know that EGM is still around? (kind of sort-of)

    2) Did you know they gave Dead Island a 9.5/10? http://www.egmnow.com/?p=4468

“It’s a once-in-a-hardware-generation gauntlet tossed confidently at the feet of sad storytellers who seem incapable of exiting the traditional notion of what gamers want.”

    Deagle, you have competition!

    1. Does the guys on the CAGcast still call the Major a “vagina clown”? I don’t really listen anymore that they stopped talking shit about people in the industry.

    1. Writing reviews by moonlight,
      Playing Disgaea by daylight,
      Running an awesome game site
He is the one named DesertEagle.

Only turning his back on crew
When there’s a JRPG review to do
Powered by ice cold Mountain Dew
He is the one named Desert….

  20. Is it me or did SeanNOLA come off as a bit rude to Blue this week? First calling him 19 then making fun of his (and Deagle’s) tastes. The others didn’t make fun of him while he was away.

    1. nah, that’s just NOLA’s style. we gotta have some sass on the show. He makes fun of all of us at times, and we make fun back. Kind of how we tease Deagle for being ancient 😉

  21. I know you guys don’t cover NPD stuff, but I read that games are off 40% from last years sales which seems pretty significant. What do you think the cause of that it? Is there a reason to worry?

  22. I’m thinking Deagle should do trivia. His questions are too complicated sometimes but they’re easier and maybe a bit more entertaining.

  23. I’m with you, Nola.

95% of the new/review/blogs are doing gaming a disservice. IGN’s now pushing videos with girls with their tits barely covered to get page views. Kotaku will twist any quote around to get readers (with Joystiq being slightly better) and Destructoid is a cesspool of crowdsourced whining led by Jim Sterling. Even you guys have to put the little sex joke in your podcast, it seems.

If gaming ever wanted to be respected like books, film, and music, it needs people who take it seriously. I want a site that does that. So you guys keep doing what you’re doing (and focus a bit) and I promise to keep coming back. I bet there’s at least a few thousand people like me. It may not be enough to pay the power bill, but if you truly love gaming, you know which way you need to head.

    1. Thanks for all the support guys. You really make doing what we do worth it. So much appreciation from our end, you don’t even know.
      Cheers!

    2. Thank you for reading the site and listening to the show.:D

I would like to clarify that we don’t go out of our way to make sex jokes. That’s just natural for our conversations. I’ve listened to well over 1,000 episodes of various podcasts over the years and personally, the most enjoyable shows to listen to are the ones that blend serious discussion and humor.

  24. Sage, have you ever thought about trying out as a guest on Weekend Confirmed? They have a female they trot out every few weeks, but she’s clearly lacking in the knowledge department and is more a disservice than anything else. From the shows I’ve listened to, you could do a much better job!

    1. Two comments from a lurker.

      1) I hope you play Dead Island. It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be.

      2) Yes, the Weekend Confirmed girl is annoying. She never listens to her cohosts.

    2. Hmm, no I haven’t. But if I did I’d have to be all, “wooo tech-gaming rocks, yeah!” and they might not like that. In all seriousness, I don’t know how I feel about being the traveling female-token gamer, you know?
