Well Tuned- Tweaked Classic Reviewed

It’s a situation familiar to owners of a portable gaming device or MP3 player- your set of ear buds is lost or damaged, requiring the purchase of a replacement set. There are a myriad of replacement options, and an idyllic solution would balance cost with exceptional sound quality. A pair of Shure earphones offers exquisite sound quality at a prohibitive price, while a set of $10 earbuds from the rack of a local electronic store has the aural capabilities of an old AM radio.

Computer peripheral manufacturer WolfKing may have the answer to that dilemma in their “Tweaked Audio” line of ear phones. Each of the three earphones- Tweaked, Tweaked Classic, and Tweaked Natural offer similar performance, differing only in aesthetic design. Each of the earphones claims to carefully blend durability and performance at a reasonable cost. Recently, I had a chance to try the Classic sound system, and were reasonably impressed.

While other manufactures may skimp on the accessories, the Tweaked Classics ship with three interchangeable ear adapters along with a drawstring pouch. Each of the flexible gel pieces fits securely over the 10mm speaker, and snugly in the user’s ear, reducing the amount of background noise. For full bass response, the earbuds require placement into the ear canal. While this was mildly awkward at first, I soon acclimated to the Classics positioning and feel. When inserted, the gel pieces create a solid seal that eliminated all but the loudest ambient sounds. Like earplugs, the users own internal sounds become amplified. Gum chewers will hear their own mastication, while runners will notice the sound of their breathing.

Once connected to a DS and PSP, the Classics offered a pleasing aural range, articulating crisp highs and a solid mid-range performance. Clearly, the ear buds greatest assets are a healthy bass response; explosions sounded hearty, while drum beats were sufficiently resonant. A common hitch with many earbuds is a soft output when a source signal isn’t particularly brawny. Fortunately, the Classics offered a robust volume consistently.

At just shy of four feet, the Classics cable length allows flexibility, allowing PSP owners to listen to music, while the portable is tucked away in a pocket. Whereas many earphones allow users to adjust the length of the cable split, the Classics permit no adjustment. Still, the static span should be ample enough for most purchasers. Tweaked claims their cable offers “strain relief” and I’d have to reason to doubt that assertion- a dozen solid tugs on the wires produced no ill effects.

At the earphone’s MSRP of $29.99, the Tweaked Classic offers exceptional performance for a relatively low price. Looking online, I found the Classic ear buds selling for as low as twenty dollars. At this rate, owners of a portable device in need of a replacement sound system could probably no better than Tweaked’s offerings.

  1. I bought a pair of JVC recently for about $20 and they were complete shite. When did JVC stop making good products?

  2. Thanks for the review. I’ll try them out, and maybe buy them. What retailers carry them?

  3. Good review. I need a new pair for my iPhone. Do they have a version with a mic also?

  4. I don’t understand the price difference just for the look. Who would get the natural, then?

  5. While reviews of earphones are good, I always have to hear for myself before making a purchase.

  6. The ones from apple always fall out of my ears. I hope these are made better.

  7. Friend has a pair, they sound really good for the money. I prefer full earphone, but your those into buds, this is the one to get.

  8. wow guess I’m the only one voting or this is universally loved.

I have to disagree with that most buds styled like that have three adapters (S,M,L) and the pouch isn’t something you’ll ever use. That said I do need some buds that are cheapish but not complete trash.
